Ang simbahan ay itinalaga bilang isang UNESCO World Heritage Site noong Disyembre 11, 1993 bilang bahagi ng Baroque Churches ng Pilipinas, isang koleksyon ng apat na Baroque Spanish-era simbahan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kinilala ang simbahang ito dahil sa \u201cpambihirang estilong pang-arkitektura na pag-aangkop ng Europeong Baroque sa Filipinas ng mga artisanong Tsino at Filipino.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Itinayo ang simbahan ng mga paring Agustino. Ang simboryo ay ginawa noong 1810 at natapos makalipas ang isang ta\u00f3n. Ang simbahan at kumbento ay n\u00e1sa itaas ng isang burol kung kaya\u2019t nagbibigay ito ng panoramikong tanawin sa mga karatig-bayan at tabing-dagat. Mayroong mahigit 80 hagdang-bato mula sa paanan ng burol paakyat sa simbahan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gaya ng iba pang simbahang itinayo sa panahon ng pananakop ng Espanyol, ang patsada ng Simbahang Santa Maria ay napagigitnaan ng dalawang malalaking haligi at ang buong estruktura ay sinusuportahan ng iba pang matataas at malalapad na mga haliging semento.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Natatangi naman ang mamula-mulang kulay ng simbahan dahil yari ito sa adobe. Nakatay\u00f4 sa bandang gilid ng simbahan ang nakahiwalay na kampanaryo na yari sa bato at parang isang pagodang Tsino na may patong-patong na hugis oktagonal na papaliit ang sukat pataas. Sa harap naman ng simbahan ay makikita ang kumbento na nakadugtong sa pamamagitan ng tulay na bato.
